Happy New Year, guys. It's 11:50 pm on the 31st of December, and I felt like I needed to post something before the year was over.
Did I ever tell you that I was scared of these days? These 31sts of December? I hate them. They're just a reminder of how epically I failed that year. Of how I went backwards. Of how nothing special happened.
I live in a fantasy land all the time, and this one day a year is when the reality hits. You know? It's like when you have a class project to turn in, and you don't do it for months, and then you wake up the day you were supposed to turn it in and you're like there is literally nothing I can do about this right now.
You failed.
Congratulations.
But I guess there's a reason this is called New Year's Eve and not The Last Day of the Old Year or something like that.
You're not supposed to look back. You're supposed to stride forward with confidence.
I didn't have a new year's resolution until I started realising this. Oh, and by the way, if you look up RESOLUTION in the dictionary, there's a side note that says SEE NOTE AT COURAGE.
Just thought that was cool. Because making resolutions does take courage. As does going into the new year. Let's be brave together, okay?
Anyway.
My resolution is to start accepting my mistakes and my flaws, because I have them.
And one more. At first I thought I was going to say I'M GOING TO STOP BEING AFRAID, but that's stupid. You can't do that.
So I'm going to start being brave.
Love you guys.

ReplyDeleteYou just managed to make me smile. Hats off to you, good emu.
Well, that is insanely quoteable, and you should put it in a book. Somebody has to- it's way too good to not use. Also, I wanted to point out that- maybe this is different for me because I have no perception of time and dwell in uncertainty, but I wouldn't say a new year is like a sign that you failed and now it's over. If you really think about it, it's just another day. The sun rises and sets, and then it rises again the next morning, as usual. It only has any meaning because we give it meaning. And every second is passing by so quickly, and we can never get a single second back. Unless you're lucky enough to befriend an alien with a TARDIS. But even then, you couldn't stop time- only travel through it. So if a new year is an ending, so is every second of every hour of every day of your entire life. And those seconds aren't guaranteed to us. They're precious, and we don't often waste them, I think. But we do often underestimate ourselves. Think about how many breaths you took this past year. I bet you can't even count them all. Think of how many moments you spent just living. Those are all accomplishments. Think of how many times you moved the muscles in your face to make a smile, or a frown, or formed words, or wrote something down. Those are all accomplishments. And you've left some effect, no matter how unexpectedly large or small, on every person who's ever looked at you this past year. Every person you've ever looked at. And a lot of people you've never even seen. Maybe one day you dropped a piece of paper that someone else picked up, and in some small way, it changed them. Or not even that, just made their life richer. That was one more experience. Accomplishment. All of us have accomplished plenty, I know- the tricky part is getting yourself to acknowledge your accomlishments. Because even if they sound small, imagine what the world would be like if none of those things happened. You haven't failed this year. But you have come up with a beautiful resolution for the next one.
